Biography

Born of Cuban parents Reinaldo and Paula Bermudez, Theresa, then known as Mercy Bermudez, grew up  listening to the sounds of  Cuban Music and rhythm, especially Celia Cruz and Tito Puente.

Having grown up in Miami during her primary years, she was immersed in two languages and cultures simultaneously, Cuban and American. Her family moved to Los Angeles when she was 14 years and the Cuban influence waned. Always sensing something was missing or as my father would say  “this dry piece of toast needs a little jam”, Theresa is proud to reconnect  with her Cuban  roots and culture and establish herself as a Cuban as well as American singer.

“With time and experience comes understanding, and a heartfelt sincerity to recognize  the loving, warm and fiery roots, that made me what I am today and the desire to sing  some gorgeous Cuban and Latin songs in honor of my ”lovebell parents” and as a grateful expression of my God given life”

Theresa met Michael Robertson, they married and moved to Sedona, AZ and he is now the bass player for her group “Outside The Box” .  Together with Larry Czarnecki, one of Northern Arizona's best guitarists, they formed an “acoustic groove” quartet with wide appeal playing songs in Spanish and English, acoustic or electric, and  able to meet  a variety of musical requests and needs.

As Dan Engler, editor for Kudos puts it :

“Those most familiar with Outside the Box rave about the band's versatility. If there is such a thing as a typical OTB performance, the audience can expect to hear a stylistic treasure trove of everything from the Gypsy Kings to Buena Vista Social Club to the Beach Boys to Aretha Franklin. The joy with which the group creates its music is contagious”.

As the Lead Singer for L.A.’s seminal performing & recording artists The Heaters, they released two albums on Arista Records and Columbia Records.

One of L.A.'s most loved and popular bands, they consistently sold out nights at the Whisky, Starwood and The Bottom Line in NYC. They toured throughout the United States opening for acts like Talking HeadsVan Halen and Cheap Trick. A remake of  "Why Do Fools Fall in Love" from Columbia Records became a hit in Europe. Her rendition of  "Never Been in Love" was the only top 40 hit in the U.S. for Suzie Quatro. Theresa’s re-recording of "La Bamba" became a hit in England and Europe.

During the 90’s Phil Spector heard something special in her voice and they worked together for several years in hope of recording something new until fate intervened.....

Theresa was recognized for her soulful and powerful voice across the nation. During the 80’s, The Heaters were voted one of the Top 5 performing bands of the year in the United States by Robert Hilburn of the L.A.Times and N.Y. Times. Rollng Stones Magazine was quoted as saying "(she) is only one of two singers in Los Angeles during the early 1980's that can actually sing.”
